Early mornings are meant with a desire for making and eating Mandazi for breakfast. Waking from bed and getting ready for the day’s events can only be energized by the thought of tasty Mandazi and tea or coffee for a Kenyan breakfast.
These tasty and fluffy snacks are popular in Nairobi Kenya. They’re similar to doughnuts and fun for special occasions, events and parties. Cocking them is a hobby. This is how to make simple Mandazi at home.
Ingredients
1 egg, Scrambled
½ c. sugar
½ c. milk
2 tbsp. butter, melted
2 tsp. baking powder
2 c. white flour for wheat
½ c. cooking oil, plus more as needed
Powdered sugar for sprinkling (optional)
Directions for Preparations
1. Mix together the egg, sugar, milk, butter and baking powder.
2. Slowly mix in the flour, forming dough.

3. You will Knead the mixture until you get soft Dough for making Mandazi but not sticky. Add more flour if need be.
4. With a rolling pin, roll the dough on a lightly floured surface until it’s about ¼-inch thick.
5. Let it stand for about 20 minutes, then cut the rolled Dough into 5cm for sides or diameter triangles or Circles respectively.
6. Heat the oil in a skillet.
7. Place the Circles or triangles in oil over medium heat and fry until both sides are golden brown.
8. Remove to drain on paper towels.
9. Finally Sprinkle with powdered sugar.
10. Ready to serve and now you know How to make simple Mandazi at home or at you work places.
Please Note That;
When preparing the dough, bring all the liquid ingredients to room temperature and knead them together with the dry ingredients until the dough is smooth.
Test the oil by putting a small piece of dough into the pan. The dough should gradually sizzle and turn brown. You know that you can cut whatever shapes you want for the Mandazi before throwing them into the hot oil. (Did I say throw? Do not throw, the oil will splash on you and its usually about 360F). Making very soft and tasty Mandazi is a skill that only a few have mustard.
